How Winn Group’s Support Has Enabled Music Therapy for Our Learners

Northern Counties School is able to continue their music therapy programme to learners for a full academic year thanks to a generous £10,000 donation from local solicitors .

The music therapy programme is delivered in partnership with , the UK’s largest music therapy charity. A music therapist attends Northern Counties on a biweekly basis, providing a range of music sessions to fit our learners’ needs. This includes individual sessions, group work within classes, and spontaneous music-making throughout the school day.

Music therapy supports our learners by offering a non-verbal way to express emotions, develop communication and social skills, and improve emotional regulation. It can also enhance physical coordination, boost confidence, and provide a calming or motivating presence during challenging moments, all within a creative and inclusive environment tailored to individual needs.

Ross Jackson, Deputy CSR Lead at Winn Group, joined one of our music therapy sessions to see first-hand the meaningful impact these sessions have on our learners.

Programmes like this simply wouldn’t be possible without external support, and we are so grateful to Winn Group for their generosity in making this happen.

Here’s what Martin Lonergan, headteacher at Northern Counties, had to say about the impact of this donation:

“We are incredibly grateful for the generous support from Winn Group, which has made it possible for us to continue to integrate a dedicated music therapy programme into our learning provision.

This initiative significantly enhances the services we offer, ensuring our students have access to a wide range of creative and therapeutic opportunities. The impact on their daily lives, wellbeing, and confidence will be truly transformative.”
