Family Information and FOPHS News Friday 12th July 2024

Welcome to 麻豆社 School's Family Liaison Blog!

I must admit that, as I have been doing the penultimate blog for the year to thinking just how quickly the year has passed. The final social coffee morning was on Wednesday. The draw of seeing some of the MOVE/Olympics, discussion on Preparation for Adulthood enticed a few more than usual. Feedback was positive and, as I have come to expect what you value most is talking to other parents. This was why I set them up and will continue to hold these each half term. There is always cake!

Events:

Friday 12th July: Prom for KS4 and Post 16. Have a wonderful evening.

Tuesday 16th July. Leaver鈥檚 assembly (parents/carers of those moving on will have been invited)

Friday 19th July: School is out for the summer from 15.30 We reopen to students on Wednesday 4th September.

Preparation for Adulthood.

Thanks to those who completed the survey on Preparation for Adulthood. This work will continue next term, when we will analyse the information from all 3 surveys and plan the way forward to ensure that all our parents/carers have access to information to help their young people as they move towards adulthood. There is still time, some of you told me on Wednesday you hadn鈥檛 completed the survey so here is the link:

Free School Meals.

Those eligible for free school meals will receive vouchers on Monday 22nd July from Edenred to support you over the school holidays. You will need to check your emails and your junk folder for 鈥淓denred鈥. I don鈥檛 work in the school holidays so please remember to check and activate these vouchers. They will expire during the holidays and if not activated will be cancelled by North Tyneside Council who fund them. It will not be possible to have them reissued.

If your child is eligible for income related free school meals; see form below and you do not received vouchers, please contact me urgently and I will assist.

16-19 Student Bursary.

If your child/young person is aged 16 years or more on 31st August 2024 they may be eligible for the above. I have sent letters and reminders but still have not received all the replies. This helps with cost of residential, school meals and may also cover some costs of community trips, work experience and/or equipment for those who do not go on residential or take school meals.

I can send a printed copy of the presentation to any parent who would like it; this was shared at the coffee afternoon, or I can email it to you. I鈥檓 also happy to discuss by phone if this helps.

You can find more information about the bursary on the link below:

Online Safety

The link to the Online safety information can be found on the school website under the heading 鈥淧arent and carers area鈥, then 鈥渙nline safety鈥 from the dropdown menu.

This week鈥檚 online safety blog is on:

Understanding and Addressing Malicious Communication

In our digital age, communication has become quicker and easier than ever before. However, this has also led to an increase in malicious communication, which can be harmful and distressing for both children and adults. Understanding what malicious communication is and how to address it is essential for keeping our children safe.

You can find the link to this, and previous weekly online blogs here:

Information: Mental Capacity

Many of our students need special consideration when it comes to mental capacity. Ask yourself: Do they have capacity (for some decisions but not others for example)? Do they lack capacity to make decisions? Can they make decisions with support?

Consultation on PIP

Rail Safety Message

We have been asked to share the information below; although the majority of PHS students would not be out unaccompanied, there is information on reporting incidents.

Money Saving Central.

Information on uniform deals.

Activities

Entertaining children in the school holidays can be an expensive business. Last week I shared a list of places that are suitable for those with additional needs. This week I am focusing on free or reduced cost generic activities which will be suitable for some families. Remember that there are ways of reducing costs to most venues when you are supporting a child or adult who has special/additional needs and can鈥檛 visit without support. So, look at the venue and see if they offer free carer passes. You will need proof. In previous blogs I covered things like:

Activities: Screen on the Green: Free film screenings throughout the summer

鈥淪creen on the Green is NE1's much-loved open-air cinema in the heart of the city, showing two free films a day throughout the school summer holidays, enlivening Old Eldon Square and driving repeat visits into the city from families throughout July and August.鈥

Activities: Summer in the city

Summer in the city: NE1鈥檚 Summer in the City is an epic, six-week-long programme offering free activities throughout the summer holidays on and around Newcastle鈥檚 iconic Quayside.

Activities: Restaurant week

Activities: FREE Cereal Disco at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in the school holidays

Activities: Newburn Activity Centre

SUMMER HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES

Activities: Kids go free, all day, every day with Tyne and Wear Metro

Thought for the week:

Courage does not always roar.

Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the days saying,

鈥淚 will try again tomorrow.鈥
